Dominica relief

THOUSANDS OF BOTTLES of water, canned and non-perishable foods, baby items and toiletries poured into the Coast Guard base at Spring Garden, St Michael, yesterday.

Barbadians heeded the call to help Dominica, which is said to have suffered catastrophic damage following a direct hit by Category 5 Hurricane Maria on Monday night and into yesterday morning.

“The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) wishes to express sincerest appreciation for the donations to the relief effort to the Commonwealth of Dominica. The response by organisations and individuals thus far has been outstanding,” said Captain Maria Moore, the BDF’s public relations officer, in a media release.

The donated items left Barbados yesterday evening on the HMBS Leonard C. Banfield, and another vessel is set to sail today. Donations may be taken to the HMBS Pelican on Spring Garden or at the St Ann’s Fort headquarters, Garrison, by 11 a.m.
