Mathew Knowles Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Mathew Knowles, the father of Beyoncé and Solange, will open up about his breast cancer diagnosis during an exclusive interview on Good Morning America on Wednesday morning. On Tuesday (Oct. 1), a 15-second snippet of the segment was posted on GMA’s social accounts, showing Knowles sitting down with host Michael Strahan.

Male patients with breast cancer are extremely rare, making up less than 1% of cases in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society, as quoted by Susan G. Komen’s page. The rarity stems from the fact both men and women are born with breast tissue, while only women go on to grow and develop more tissue.

The American Cancer Society also acknowledged that rates for new breast cancer cases and mortality are much lower among men than women. Men are usually diagnosed with breast cancer later in life, with the median U.S. patient age being 67. Knowles is currently 67 years old.

However, black men have the highest rate for new cases overall and a higher mortality rate than white and Hispanic men.
