Gold for Shane Brathwaite

Shane Brathwaite won gold in the men’s 110m hurdles at the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru, earlier today, ending Barbados’ wait for a medal.

And for a moment, it seemed as though Greggmar Swift would have also had a place on the podium after a flyer of a start, but he finished fourth in 13.51 seconds.

Brathwaite produced a season’s best 13.31 seconds with a legal wind of 1.8 metres per second, showing great poise and control to run back after not getting the best start.

Swift and Brazilian Gabriel Oliveira (who had the fastest qualifying time) and American Freddie Crittenden III were all ahead of him.

But Oliveira took a tumble over the sixth hurdle and as Swift faded, Brathwaite surged over the last two hurdles to nip Crittenden, who was second in 13.32.

Eduardo Dos Santos of Brazil took bronze in 13.48.

Brathwaite, a bronze medallist at the 2015 Pan Am Games, said it would be “great” to hear the Barbados anthem play in an interview after the race.

He is Barbados’ lone medal winner at the Pan Am Games and it is not the first time he has done so at a major meet. In 2014, he was the only Barbadian to reach the podium at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. (SAT)
