The Opposition People’s Party for Democracy and Development (PDP) has joined with the Barbados Bar Association in criticising Government over lack of consultation before bringing the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill, 2020, to Parliament last week.
Party spokesperson on law and order, attorney Maria Phillips, accused the Mia Amor Mottley administration of sneaking through the legislation, which would impact the right to trial by jury, while the country was focused on the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Why is this being done now, particularly during this time? Why must it be done at this point in time when we are in a public health emergency state? It makes you wonder what other things that Parliament may want to bring and pass as legislation while we are in this state. (CLM)
